{Book Tour} Review+Giveaway: Mike's Way Back by Amy Gregory

Title: Mike’s Way Back (Finding Perfect #1)
Author: Amy Gregory
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Publication Date: September 30, 2013
Cover Designed By: Davis Snodgrass
Event organized by: Literati Author Services, Inc.

Synopsis
Detective Mike Sterling walked away from his dream job telling himself it was to honor the promise he’d made his mother, while lying in a Chicago emergency room. A year later, he’s still fighting the demons that followed him back to his boyhood town.
Taryn Watts is an award-winning designer, going from project to project, living from a suitcase. Her plan for Renlend Kansas was the same as always. Go in, get the job done and get out, just the way she likes it. Growing up as a cop’s daughter, her every move was controlled. When she escaped to college she vowed to never fall in love with a cop –ever. Until she found herself sitting across from the ruggedly handsome stranger. Looking into Mike’s ice blue eyes they pulled her, called to her, but there was a haunting in them she knew too well.
Mike is drawn to Taryn, her passion for her work and her stunning beauty left him breathless, but what surprises him most is the peace he feels when he’s near her. Maybe it’s because Taryn is a temporary addition to his town and his secret is safe, or maybe it’s because she makes him feel safe. Mike knows he can’t keep up this charade and when Taryn moves to Renlend for an extended stay he can’t hide the truth any longer.

Can Taryn forget he’s a cop and give him her heart, or will his demons drive them apart?

My Review

This is the first book I've read from this author, so I didn't quite know what to expect. Fortunately, I liked this one. Although it didn't exactly wow me, I did enjoy the story overall.

Mike Sterling is a cop who moved back to his hometown after a traumatic experience in the city. Taryn Watts is in town to remodel one of the older buildings in town. The two met at a local diner, struck up a friendship which evolved into something more. But the problem was that Mike has a secret he feels he needs to hide and Taryn doesn't do permanent, nor does she do cops. So this book basically follows their relationship as they both try to overcome their issues.

What I liked...

One. I liked that the fact that this was about two mature individuals who acted like two mature individuals. Meaning, there were no unnecessary drama or petty jealousies.

Two. I enjoyed both Mike and Taryn. The author did a great job with their characters. Mike is a wonderful hero. He's alpha without being too over the top. Taryn also was a great character. She wasn't annoying or whiny, and she can totally go toe-to-toe with Mike. Their banter was wonderful.

Three. Dual POVs. Gotta love those.

What I didn't like...

One. There were parts in the book that dragged for me. While I appreciate how Mike and Taryn took time to become friends first, I felt they took too long. Around 50%, I was still waiting for something to happen relationship-wise. It took a long time for them to get together and when they finally did, the whole thing just sort of fast-forwarded. They went from sleeping together, to spilling their secrets, and then meeting the parents to saying I love you shortly after getting together. It was like nothing was happening during the first half of the book and the suddenly, things picked up and everything was crammed into the second half.

But other than that, I have no other complaints. The writing is good and the length was just enough. I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from this series and more from this author.

About the Author
When asked ‘when do you have time to write’, Amy Gregory simply laughs. The real answer is, “in bits and pieces”. She and her husband live in Kansas City with their three fantastic kids that keep them running in three very different directions. Because she sits so much, she always carries a notebook with her at all times.
She has an off the wall, snarky, off the cuff sense of humor that often shocks even those who’ve known her for years. And she loves that her children have all been blessed that ability to make others laugh as well. At least she’s grateful most of the time! Her husband often teases her about how she “makes this stuff up” when he’s reading a piece of her work. … The answer—“it just comes to me when I’m typing”. Scary thought, huh!

{Review} Fighting Love (Love to the Extreme #2) by Abbi Niles

Blurb
Talk about kicking a fighter while he’s down.

Former Middleweight champion and confirmed bachelor Tommy "Lightning" Sparks has lost it all: his belt, his career, and now his home. After the devastating fire, he moves in with his drama-free best friend, Julie. One encounter changes everything and Julie is no longer the girl he’s spent his life protecting but a desirable woman he wants to take to his bed. Knowing his reputation, he’s determined to protect Julie more than ever—from himself.

Veterinarian Julie Rogers has been in love with Tommy since she was ten, but would love to get over the man. She’s quiet nights at home and a glass of wine. He’s clubbing all night and shots of tequila. As friends they work great. As a couple? No way in hell. She just can’t get her heart to agree. When she starts spending time with another fighter, the man who’s always treated her like a sister is suddenly not being very brotherly and enflames her body like never before.

Can two childhood friends make a relationship work, or will they lose everything because they stopped FIGHTING LOVE

My Review
4 stars!!

This book almost didn't make it to a four-star read for me. I'll explain the reason why in few...

What I really I liked...

Julie Rogers. What can I say? She's my kind of gal. She's strong, smart, beautiful and doesn't do drama. I loved that about her. While she did pine for her best friend for a long time, she wasn't a doormat. She knows her mind and she's not afraid to walk away. I also loved that she took the initiative of seducing Tommy when she realized that Tommy is never going to make the first move. I respect that.

I enjoyed the writing, too. The plot, while it has been done before, was well executed and the story was well-paced. Not once did I experience a lull. It just flowed and before I knew it, I finished it. And you know what they say...Time flies when you're having fun. Well, I certainly did have a lot of fun reading Ms. Niles' work.

Now onto what I didn't like so much...

Tommy Sparks. Yes, I did love his back story. Abbi Niles did a great job fleshing out his character. I fell for the whole fallen-hero-seeking-redemption aspect of his character. BUT, I'm sorry to say that for most of the book he acted like a wuss. He runs hot and then cold so fast I had whiplash. The constant back and forth almost ruined the whole book for me.
BUT AGAIN, the guy redeemed himself in the end. That groveling speech he did was wonderful.

The Verdict?

I'll definitely be reading more from this series and I'll be recommending it as well. I'm keeping my eye on Mac's and Brody's story as well. Can't wait.

My eyes go to where she’s tapping, and then follow up to her face. I try to avoid her abrasive orbs. “You’re overpowered by agony and torment, and it’s slowly claiming you day by day.” I finally concede and look into Stella's eyes. I don't do 'normal'. I've found that the more I write, the more I like being different to other authors. I write in first person, and I love to challenge a reader. I take the normal and switch it around. For me, I really enjoy getting a reaction from a reader. So if I can evoke an emotion (regardless of if it's the emotion the reader wants) then I figure that I've done my job as an author I want to be. I really quite revel in taking people out of their comfort zones and pushing them to read something different. My genre of writing is, well quite frankly, where ever my mind goes. I won't label myself because I don't like sticking to one genre. My goal with writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it's only for a split second. I'm a go with the flow sort of person and don't really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don't usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I'll be happy to accept. I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. I really don't like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don't believe that's necessary, I mean life's hard enough as it is! I hope you enjoy my books, I've had a hoot writing them. There's more to come..... Til next time. M xx

{Review} Kiss Me at Midnight by Diane Alberts

Blurb
Her New Year’s resolution was seduction.

Doctor Ashley Hanes has one mission and one mission only—end her annoyingly long dry streak and ring in the New Year with a bang. Literally. When her long lost and oh-so-sexy ex-best friend, Ethan Pierce, shows up as if he hadn’t broken her heart all those years ago, suddenly she doesn’t want to bring home just any man. She wants Ethan.

What should have been one night of blow-your-mind make-up sex quickly turns into another. And another. Before long, Ashley thinks maybe she and Ethan should reunite for good. If only the elusive bachelor will stop running from his tortured past and trust a future in Ashley’s arms.

My Review

4.5 sweet-hot stars!

Kiss Me at Midnight proves that less is sometimes more. In this case, 100 or so pages less than the usual book length. This novella was packed with likable and endearing characters, witty dialogue, great chemistry between the two MCs and steamy, steamy sex.

The story...
Ashley Hanes and Ethan Pierce both wanted the same thing on New Year's eve. They want uncomplicated no strings attached sex. But not with each other though. For one, Ethan Pierce broke Ashley's heart back in high school when he suddenly ignored her their whole senior year. Two, Ethan doesn't want to go back to his hometown ever. See, he was the school geek and was bullied by almost everybody, so it was no surprise that the guy was bitter about it. He managed to reinvent himself though, transforming from being a serious geek into a drool-worthy hunk. Third, he doesn't want a relationship and neither does Ashley. So they agreed on one night only. One night of no-strings attached sex. But despite their past and their reservations, the one-night stand turned into a hot torrid weekend affair.

My thoughts...

I absolutely enjoyed this novella. Ethan and Ashley were both great characters. Ethan was especially endearing. He was your typical geek getting picked on by others and he had a stutter that made him even more self-conscious. Even after he reinvented himself, there was that geek in him that was really adorable. I don't really like the men in my books to be insecure but somehow, it works for Ethan in this book. And while he did frustrate me a bit with his "I-will-never-move-back-to-this-town-again," stance, he was still a great character. And Ashley was the perfect foil. Although she wasn't as geeky like Ethan, she was still quiet and not at all popular. I loved how she challenged Ethan's long-held beliefs about people and about moving back to their hometown.

Of course, the ending was bit predictable but I didn't really care since it was so well done. The story flowed smoothly with no dull moments and it even has an epilogue. And the epilogue was just...so romantic. A truly fitting ending to Ethan and Ashley's story

{Release Day Blitz) Always You by Missy Johnson

I was thrilled when I was offered a graduate teaching position at the prestigious Tennerson Girls Academy. At twenty-three, this would be my first ‘real’ teaching assignment. Working at the elite boarding school, home to the daughters of some of the wealthiest people in the world, was a great opportunity that I would’ve been stupid to pass up.

One week into my new job, and I suddenly had no idea why I chose high school…I was a seventeen year old boy once, I knew how teenage girls behaved.

You can’t even imagine the hell of trying to teach thirty, hormonal driven seventeen year olds who have been cooped up, away from any male contact.

I could handle the whispers every time I entered the room. I could even handle the obvious attempts at gaining my attention. What I couldn’t handle was her…

Rich bitches and way too many rules. Was it any wonder that I hated school?

Add to that the lack of male contact, and I was going insane. Like literally. I wasn’t used to this. A year ago I was normal. I had a boyfriend, friends and a loving family. There is nothing normal about me anymore, and nobody here lets me forget that.

My name is Wrenn, and I’m only here because my aunt took me in after what happened, but my aunt also happens to be the headmistress of this academy…Can you see my problem?

I’m hated for my lack of money, and I’m hated for who my Aunt is.

Then he arrived. Dalton Reed. My new history teacher.

Slowly, he helped me see that even in the worst situations, there is always hope.

Missy lives in a small town in Central Victoria with her husband, and her confused pets (a dog who think she's a cat, a cat who thinks he's a dog...you get the picture).

When she's not writing, she can usually be found looking for something to read.

About the Author
I love to read. I'm a huge fan of books and when I start reading anything, I usually forgo doing everything else, I mean the housework will still be there in the morning (right?). When I love a story or book that I've downloaded, I usually refrain from sleep and am crabby the next day - but only until I pick my iPad up and start reading again!

I was recently described by a reviewer as my writing style is Chick-Lit with an Edge. I liked that so much that that's the way I describe the genre I write.

My goal when writing is just to take people away from whatever is going on in their lives, even if it's only for a split second.

I'm a go with the flow sort of person and don't really take a course of action to get where I am going. I live in the moment and don't usually worry about tomorrow because whatever life is due to bring me, I'll be happy to accept.

I love my family and friends and will help anyway I can if someone needs it. Every Friday I spend it with my girlfriends where we have 'cake day', which usually consists of a yummy yet nutritious lunch, quickly destroyed by a delicious and devilishly good cake and a caramel latte.

I really don't like people that are nasty just because they can be, I don't believe that's necessary, I mean life is hard enough as it is!

Three things you need to know about me; 1 - I'm fiercely loyal and will bend over backwards to help. 2 - I love chocolate, like A LOT and 3 - I have a huge crush on David Gandy at the moment! (I mean, who hasn't, have you seen the man????)

{Review} Rebel by Skye Jordan

Rebel (Renegades, #2)Rebel by Skye Jordan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

4 because of Wes stars!!

*Could have easily been a full five if not for Rubi and her "issues."

Rebel is the second book in Jordan Skye's Renegades Series. Like its predecessor, this book is scorching hot. Panty-melting, fan-yourself hot. And features two equally hot and gorgoues characters in Wes and Rubi. But the star of this book for me is Wes Lawson.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Jax was hot but in my opinion, Wes is hotter. Plus, he didn't have Jax's insecurities. Not only that, he goes after his woman with single-minded determination. But what I liked more about Wes is that he's stable and centered and he knows what he wants. He wants the ONE. And apparently, (although I don't agree with him), Rubi is the ONE.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Fortunately, as cool as Rubi was in the first book, she didn't endear herself to me in this book. In fact, she annoyed the crap out of me with her insecurities and fears. I get it. She was neglected as child but she's also gorgeous (hello, top model), smart (very smart), and funny. But her constant whining about how she's so scared of committing to Wes because he might abandon her grated on my nerves. This girl had everything going for her and she's too blinded by her own issues to see it. 80% of the drama in the book came from Rubi's fear of commitment. That's it. She just kept on pushing Wes away and I was like...

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I know, I know. I'm not entirely being fair but the girl had so much going for her but her issues drove me crazy. Hence, the reason for one less star. While she did redeemed herself in the end, I felt that her issues were drawn out to the point where I was just over it. Annoying heroines are a deal-breaker for me. If it hadn't been for Wes and the fact that this book seriously hot, I would have rated this lower than a four.

So Wes this is for you...

Synopsis

***This novel contains graphic sexual content and harsh language. It is only appropriate for adult readers age 18+.

Have you ever been so angry that hitting things felt good? Or so numb that you actually felt high? The past few years have been like that for me. Traveling between fury and indifference with no stops in between.

Some people hate me for it, while others are scared of me. But none of them can hurt me, because I don't care about anything or anyone.

Except Tatum.

I love her so much that I hate her. We used to be friends, but I found out that I couldn't trust her or anyone else.

So I hurt her. I pushed her away.

But I still need her. The sight of her centers me, and I can pool all of my anger into her. Engaging her, challenging her, bullying her...they are my food, my air, and the last part of me that feels anything human.

But she left. She went to France for a year, and came back a different girl.

Now, when I push, she pushes back.

Excerpt
Pulling up the window and leaning out, I spied the branch sliding against the panes above me. With him gone, I’d have to take care of that tomorrow.
The rain was coming down in sheets and made everything glisten under the bright glow of the streetlights. I let my gaze wander through the maze of branches, shaking off memories of which ones I’d scraped my leg on or which ones I’d sat on with Tate.
I loved the damn tree, and I wanted it cut down.
And then…I didn’t even see the tree anymore.
My eyes caught sunshine in a midnight sky, and I fucking stilled.
Tate?
“What the hell?” I whispered, breathless and not blinking.
She was standing in her bedroom, leaning on the doorframe of her open French doors. And she was staring at me.
What the hell am I seeing right now?
She was supposed to be in Germany with her dad, at least until Christmas.
Every muscle in my body tightened as I supported myself on the window sill, but I couldn’t tear my eyes from her. It was like I was in an alternate universe, starving, and she was a fucking buffet.
She was home.
I closed my eyes for a moment and swallowed down my heartbeat that was creeping up my throat. I was sick, excited, and grateful all at the same time.
Jesus, she’s home.
She wore some little pajama shorts and a white tank top. Not really so different from what I’d noticed she wore to bed a year ago, but for some reason, the sight of her was like a raging fire through my chest. I wanted to rip through the fucking tree and peel all the clothes off of her and love her like the past three years had never happened.
Her hair blew around her, and I could feel her eyes, locked in shadow, on me.
My mouth was dry, and the rush of breath and blood through my body felt so damn good.
Until she backed up and closed the doors.
No. I swallowed, not wanting her to go away.
Go on. Go pick a fight, I told myself, but I shook my head.
No. Just leave her alone. She hasn’t been thinking about me, and I needed to get over it.
I was crawling the walls inside my head, knowing for fact that I needed to grow up and let her be. Let her go to school without rumors and pranks hovering over her. Let her be happy. We were nearly adults now, and this petty shit had to end.
But…
I’d just felt more alive in the past ten seconds than I had in a year.
Seeing that face, knowing I’d wake up to her blaring music and seeing her leave the house to jog in the morning…
My phone buzzed with a text, and I walked over to check it.
It was from Tate’s dad.
Change of plans. Tate’s home. On her own until Christmas. Give her back the house key, and be nice. Or else.
I narrowed my eyes, rereading the text over and over again.
I don’t even think I breathed.
She was alone? Until Christmas?
I closed my eyes, and let out a laugh.
And all of a sudden I was as thrilled as hell to wake up tomorrow.

Q&A with Jared Trent
At the end of your book, we are left with you and Tate finally together. How are things going now with you and Tate?

Great…when her father leaves us alone. We hit the drive-in, park at the lake, go for drives, park at the lake, work on our rides, park at the lake…

What has been your school's reaction after your declaration during school assembly seeing how you made Tate's life miserable before and now you're together?

Yeah, I’m getting a little shit for it, but I figure Tate’s put up with the same and more, so….

College plans. Tell me about that.
Mr. Brandt is pushing West Point, and I like that it’s not that far from Tate at Columbia, but I’m just not sure yet. Madoc is applying to LSU, so I’ve also applied there. We’ll see.

You and Tate have known each other for a long time but tell me about one thing or things that still surprises you about her?
After so long without her, I got used to people not challenging me. She does. All. The. Time. It makes me happy. It makes me laugh. It turns me on.

Speaking of Tate, I know she's going to be racing at the loop soon. What kind of advice have you been giving her?
As much as I can cram down her throat. Guys out there are’t very PC. I’m nervous they’ll be too afraid of losing to a girl. But Tate doesn’t listen, and it will definitely be an interesting summer seeing what she does with what I’ve taught her.

Where do you see yourself and Tate, five years or so down the line?
Hopefully in our own damn apartment with our own damn bed.

Book Trailer

My Review & Casting

5 never-a-dull-moment stars!! This book was one heck of a ride. Being in Jared's head was at times scary, frustrating, sad, dirty--like really dirty--but still effin' enjoyable. Not to mention this book is HOT! Like really panty-melting and so raunchy, it should be illegal, kind of hot.

First off, I have to congratulate Penelope Douglas for truly giving us Jared's story. This book wasn't a rehash of Bully. While there are plenty of things here that we've already seen/read from Bully, we also get a lot, and I mean, A LOT of new scenes about Jared, about his father, his relationship with his mother, Jax and Madoc. And we really get to know what he's thinking during those times where he made Tate's life miserable.

Until You starts off with a 10-year old Jared meeting a 10-year old Tate for the first time. It was very cute and we see a glimpses of their relationship prior to the "Bully" years through Jared's memory. It was through this flashbacks that we found out what pushed Jared to make that life-changing decision to spend his summer with his dad when he was 14 and the falling out with Tate afterwards.

And it ain't pretty.

Jared

Jared is one angry dude. Really angry. You can feel his anger, his loss of control. He just wants to lash out. The problem is he couldn't lash out at the people who have hurt him and abandoned him, mainly his father and mother. So he focused all his anger at that one person.

Tate

Poor Tate. She took the brunt of Jared's anger without ever really knowing why. All she can do was cry and suffer in silence until she decided to fight back and give Jared the 'middle finger.'

The I-want-you-but-I-hate-you signal coming from Jared drove me batshit crazy at times. But I really can't complain that much since that's one of the best part of this book. Jared tried so hard so hold on to his hate but found himself falling deeper and deeper in love with Tate instead. When he's not being an ass though, Jared can be sweet, funny and protective.

But what I like best about this book was that despite showing us Jared's atrocious experience at the hands of his father, it was never used as a vehicle to justify Jared's action. In fact, this book shows how illogical Jared's thought process was when it comes to Tate. So if you read this book searching for more answers as to why, you might be disappointed. But that doesn't mean Jared didn't redeem himself. He did. But he redeemed himself by actually admitting it and not because we get a clear cut explanation on why he bullied Tate.

“There are times when we can blame a situation on others, but we own our reactions to them. There comes a point where we are the ones responsible for our choices and excuses don’t carry weight anymore.”

The only thing I didn't like about this book is KC. Yeah. Sorry, but I really didn't buy that making Liam jealous angle. As if she didn't enjoy Jared's attention. *Roll eyes* Okay. So I'm a little jealous of the skank but can you really blame me?
