Virtual Book Tour: Shannon's Law by Emma Calin

Synopsis

Wild child inner-city cop Shannon Aguerri walks a dangerous line between her methods and justice. When the bosses lose their nerve, after yet another maverick mission, she is transferred to green pastures to play out the role of a routine village cop. When she encounters signs of slave and drug trafficking she homes in on serious millionaire criminals.

As a loner she has attracted men but nothing has stuck. When she meets Spencer, the hunky and widowed Earl of Bloxington, there is an immediate rapport between them. Their social differences mean nothing to their passion and need.

Already in the mix is an upper class female rival – who has long plotted her way into the Earl's bed. The jealousy is an evil shade of green and the anger is a violent scarlet.

Often inhibited by a sense of duty and honour, Spencer is slow to reveal his feelings. When Shannon confronts him with the need to choose between her word and that of her rival, he does not immediately support her.

All issues are set aside, when they are forced together to carry out a desperate rescue mission. Their love is stronger than everything ranged against them.

Today’s subject Drug Crime in Shannon’s Law: Cannabis

They say you are never more than twenty feet from a rat. Statisticians love these bold big brush figures. Certainly you are never far from some cannabis. It might be in someone's pocket, in a car passing by, growing in your local cemetery or being cultivated in a window box. In Shannon's Law you are never far from the influence of drugs. This is simply because crime is associated with narcotics and prohibited substances.

In my London days, cannabis smoking formed so much of the sub culture that it was the culture. My police consultants merely shrug at the issue. It is a fact of life like red buses. It would be wrong to stereotype the south London culture of my teens. The image of Bob Marley and his spliff was and still is pervasive. His music had a predominantly white liberal audience. Real Reggae fans wanted something far harder.

Writing police centered Romance means I have to look at crime trends and evolving social patterns. These days very little cannabis is imported into the UK.  Both criminal gangs and DIY gardeners grow it here. As a youngster I got to know the smell on the street  as if it were a hot dog or market stall flowers. The more modern “skunk” weeds have a powerful aroma.

Police action against cannabis possession varies hugely. There are local peace treaties between police and the “community” in some areas. In other places, there is rigorous enforcement. Most big time cannabis criminals have also got their snouts in other far filthier troughs. Attitudes to legalization appear to split the public. It's all enough to turn me and many cops to drink.

She caught a whiff of ganja on the still air. So, there was a drug issue in paradise perhaps. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad here after all?
